On the 24th January an interesting but not unexpected shift in the politics occurred when Kamla Persad-Bissessar was voted in as political leader of the United National Congress dethroning the charismatic veteran leader and founder of the party, Basdeo Panday. This paved the way for her being sworn in as Leader of the Opposition on the 25th February. Kamla's victory is significant in more ways than one.

What Were you Expecting from Minister Le Gendre? July 10, 2008
I just had to comment on last Sunday's Express article by Ms Sheila Rampersad in which she expressed her great disappointment over Education Minister Esther Le Gendre's attack on Mickela Panday in Parliament. With all due respect to Ms Rampersad, I found her expectations of Ms Le Gendre and indeed the whole idea of women's solidarity in our political context were naive to say the least.

On Albright's "Lost" Aura of Democracy January 13, 2008
I really loved the well-written article by former Secretary of State Madeleine (shouldn't that be Meddlin?) Albright on the Trinidad Express on Friday 11th January. Such hubris, such hypocrisy compressed into twelve paragraphs. It was exactly the sort of historically decontextualised drivel I have come to expect from North Atlantic political figures (although, given what passes for local journalism and radio talk, it has spread here as well).
